The work belongs to the very final period of the Venetian composer Bruno Maderna’s creative output (Sant’Anna di Chioggia, 21 April 1920–Darmstadt, Germany, 13 November 1973), who is regarded as a key figure of the historical avant-garde; a constant explorer of new compositional techniques, he is also remembered for his extraordinary ability as a great populariser and excellent interpreter of the music of his time.

The opera *Satyricon* was first performed at the Holland Festival in Scheveningen on 16 March 1973; the libretto is based on the Latin novel of the same name attributed to Petronius.

Satyricon is an opera buffa with a strong sarcastic element.

The performance revolves around the pivotal episode of Petronius’ book, Trimalchio’s dinner, behind whose crass and ostentatious vulgarity is symbolised the total crisis of values in a world heading for decadence.

The Festival Puccini has produced the new production with direction, sets and costumes by Manu Lalli under the direction of Tonino Battista and will be staged in the Auditorium Enrico Caruso.
